Please do give terminated or break contract helpers a consideration, as it may be due to many reasons. The main reason for a domestic helper to break her contract is unfair treatment, such as having to work for unreasonable hours, not being given enough food, not being paid the salary, having to sleep in poor conditions due to lack of space in the apartment or being refused medical attention etc.

The onus of providing the proof if reporting the employer to the authorities falls on the helper and a lack of evidence will not support a claim, therefore the helper often has no choice but to break her contract. Some helpers are also breaking their contract due to personal reasons (medical emergency, family issue in her country etc) In these cases, the helper invariably chooses to leave the job, and not prolong her contract. The helper must perform her notice period of one month (or pay a penalty of up to one month's salary to her employer if no notice is given) and then she will go back to her country of origin.

An employer who wants to hire a break contract helper has the obligation to use an employment agency. In this case, a new immigration process is required (at least 8 weeks, average 12 weeks).
